  8. Rene Descartes, known as the founder of modern western philosophy, unlike previous philosophers, who focused on rudimental questions of human existence. Descartes believes that he exists because he thinks, therefore any human do does not think is as good as termed dead. It is advisable that a real seeker of truth should ponder before concluding on issues for decision-making.

    Descartes quotes that, "If you would be a real seeker after truth,…. One of his most reputable works is called Meditations on the First Philosophy. The book is made up of six mediations in which Descartes seeks to prove what knowledge is undoubtedly true. In his third meditation, Descartes attempts to provide evidence for the existence of God. He raises one main argument, followed by a supplemental argument.

    He sets up his first premise by stating that he, in fact, does have a concept of God:…. Rene Descartes distinguishes between two kinds of knowledge; that which can and indeed should be doubted persuasio and that which is grounded in reason so properly it cannot be shaken by any stronger reason scentia.

    Descartes grounds this distinction in his method of categorical doubt — he attempts to doubt the truths of all his past beliefs while being guided by the light of intellect and hopefully become able to see clearly and distinctively with his mind 's eye when he reaches certainty. This paper is going to argue that in Rene Descartes, Meditations on First Philosophy, Thomas Hobbes, Leviathan, both are contrasting how we know that God really exists and how we know what we perceive in this world actually exists as well.
